「玉虫塗」是一種漆藝技法，其成品看起來晶瑩剔透，如同寶石甲蟲的耀眼翅膀。工匠會在上漆前，在底層均勻塗抹銀粉，令銀粉最終透過反覆塗拭的漆，若隱若現散發出透亮光澤。這正是「山與海」系列的杯底內，均帶有一層銀的原因。透明的玻璃讓我們看得見，平常被掩藏在層層漆之下，悄悄閃耀光芒的銀粉。

系列使用著名的松德硝子薄玻璃為基底，再以玉虫塗技法上色，表現宮城県內連綿起伏的山巒和海浪，像層層堆疊的山影，又像潮退過後，殘留在沙灘上的淡淡水痕。
